MY TILE + ME
What’s your name? JK (Jennie-Kate) McQuinn
What’s your What3Words tile? Sleep.Otter.Credible
Where is it? Part of Waterfall on the Lugg in the RWT Pentwyn project. It sits between some trees in the open field.
What does wildness mean to you?
For me, wildness isn’t just about Nature. It’s about ourselves too.
I work with many people and teams who are disconnected from the natural world, but have also suppressed their own ‘wild’ or ‘unique’ parts of themselves. This was my story too for a while, and now, working alongside Nature, I’ve developed a deeper care for the world and a greater love for the unique parts of myself. Now, I help others find the same, learning from Nature’s own ways.
What I’ve come to see is that wildness isn't about being unruly or disruptive, as some people assume the word to mean. It's a harmonious state of being our natural selves, and recognising that we belong to something bigger than ourselves too. To me, it feels like freedom.
What first drew you to Wild Mosaic?
I loved that Jon understood that rewilding isn’t just about funding nature recovery – that there is an important ‘people’ element too, rooted in how we relate or feel in relationship to the natural world. I liked that Wild Mosaic encourages kinship with nature and with your tile, rather than simply offering a place to put money towards a good cause.
Can you describe your relationship to your tile?
I loved choosing my tile. It felt like an important decision, and I noticed how seriously I was taking it. It wasn’t just about finding a great What3Words location; I was thinking about where the tile sat on the land, what features surrounded it, and wondering how it might change over time. I’ve loved receiving updates on the wider site and exploring how close those changes were to my own tile.
If I had to summarise, I’d say my relationship with it is one of curiosity and connectedness. I like knowing that I’m contributing to supporting this particular space to become wilder.
I often imagine what a tile in the woodland I use regularly would look like, and when I wander around the site I’ll visualise a 3x3 tile, zoom in, and notice what’s emerging right in front of me. In that way, my Wild Mosaic tile has also deepened my curiosity and sense of connection in my local landscape.
And how do you bring more wildness into your life?
If I could stay outdoors all day, I probably would – though i do love a warm fire and blanket! My role is naturally wild; I’m a coach who works with people in Nature. I love long walks with the dogs and camping adventures with my husband and friends. I’ve been intentional about learning more about wild species, both because my clients love to explore this together and because it’s given me a much deeper appreciation for the wild spaces I visit.
If you could be a ‘Wild Thing’ what would you be?
Oh, there are so many directions I could go with this! My middle name is Rowan, so the Rowan Tree is an obvious answer. I also love birds of prey – I’d love to be able to see the world like a Red Kite or Kestrel can, and I try to bring that wide, elevated perspective into my business and life when I feel too caught up in the detail of things. But then I think about how magnificent it would be to be a big splashy, crashing waterfall… and I think I’d land there.
